PrEP, HIV, and the COVID Vaccine

Are COVID vaccines safe for PrEP users and people living with HIV?

Can I get vaccinated if i’m taking PrEP?

Yes! Taking PrEP is an incredibly effective way to prevent HIV. Taking PrEP medication is not a reason to delay getting the COVID-19 vaccine, and there is no current evidence to suggest that the vaccine will be any less safe for people using PrEP.

Getting the COVID vaccine will not make PrEP any less effective, and using PrEP won’t impact how the vaccines works to protect you from COVID illness.

Can I get vaccinated if i’ve been taking PEP?

We use the same kinds of medication for people who need PEP (after an exposure to HIV) and for PrEP (for ongoing prevention), so using PEP and having the COVID vaccine is safe, and effective.

Are COVID-19 vaccines safe for people living with HIV?

Yes! People living with HIV who contract COVID-19 may be at greater risk of severe illness - so getting the vaccine is a great way to stay healthy. Early in the response to COVID-19 people living with HIV were made a priority to get vaccinated. Talk to your doctor or book an appointment today.

Because of how the COVID-19 vaccine works, the chance of a negative reaction between the vaccine and any medication is extremely small. Taking anti-retroviral HIV medication is not a reason to delay getting the COVID-19 vaccine, and there is no current evidence to suggest that the vaccine will be any less safe for people living with HIV.

Do HIV drugs like PrEP protect me from or treat COVID-19?

Early in the global response to COVID-19 some HIV drugs were trialled as a potential treatment for COVID-19. There is currently no evidence that these medicines are effective against the virus.
